Ashu’s journey at The Salvation Army Thrift Store began seven years ago when she moved from India to Canada. Shortly after attending a job fair, Ashu was hired in March 2017 by the Thrift Store and is currently our Supervisor of Operations at our Donor Welcome Centres within the Region of Peel’s Community Recycling Centres also known as CRCs.

In addition to having a professional background in finance, Ashu has a Bachelors of Education. Since coming to Canada, she has had the opportunity to start anew by working in the non-profit sector where her passion for teaching shines through in her interactions with colleagues and donors alike, as she continuously strives to educate and inspire others.
What drew her to The Salvation Army is the organization’s mission and dedication to noble causes. “I’m inspired by the positive change that The Salvation Army brings to the lives of so many people here and all around the world. It’s amazing.”
Every day presents a new opportunity to connect with our donors and Ashu understands that it is not always easy to part with our belongings. At times, donors may experience an array of emotions when dropping off items, especially those belonging to a loved one. Although the situation may be difficult to navigate at times, Ashu is there to offer words of compassion!
To have just as much success on the job professionally, Ashu emphasized the importance of effective communication and the interconnectedness of her team. She also added that, “If I was to reflect on my career at Salvation Army, I can advise my fellow employees or anybody who’s a newcomer, to approach their work with an open heart and open mind because it only makes you a better person, and to embrace the diverse stories that people share and their different backgrounds. Also, make it your own mission to do small acts of kindness that will have a larger impact on the lives of others.”
We thank Ashu for her passion and dedication to our organization. Through her efforts, she has touched the lives of countless donors and colleagues alike. As concluded her interview with inspiring words, “I don’t think I could have been at a better place. It is so fulfilling, and life is so beautiful.”
