Many people are familiar with our Thrift Stores, but few realize the tremendous efforts that go on behind the scenes to keep them running smoothly. Across Canada, our teams who work in our 11 Distribution and Recycling Centres work tirelessly to make sure our stores are well-stocked and ready to serve our communities.
One such dedicated team member is Mike, who is a truck driver at the Scarborough Distribution and Recycling Centre (DRC). Mike has been an important part of the team since 2019 and plays a key role in ensuring that stores receive product in full and on time.
What drew Mike to The Salvation Army Thrift Store initially was the need to find part-time work. He began his career as a Donor Attendant at the Newmarket location, making the move to Driver Helper, and then working his way up to his current role as a full-time Driver.
Mike, like other drivers at the DRC, organizes his routes for maximum efficiency, which adds a sense of variety to his day. “You’re not stagnant and bored of just doing the same repetitive thing over and over, which is nice,” said Mike. He also looks forward to interacting with our Store Managers on a daily basis.
Jose, our Distribution Manager at the Scarborough DRC said, “Everybody is so happy with Mike because he treats people nicely, helps them and goes above and beyond.” Jose also added that, “Mike is very dedicated to his job, has established great communication with all Stores Managers and donors, and has become an important driver at many city events where The Salvation Army Thrift Store collects donations of clothing and household items.”
There are many GREAT reasons why individuals choose to work at The Salvation Army Thrift Store including health benefits and more, for which Mike expressed gratitude. His words of wisdom for those joining the organization are, “If you work hard, there’s room for growth.”
Thank you, Mike, for all that you do! Your drive for success helps us to care for our communities and the planet we share.
