How Working at White Rock Builds Community for Leah

September 25, 2024

After experiencing burnout from her corporate job, our staff member Leah was looking to start a new career in the non-profit sector. Having lived in downtown Vancouver for over 10 years, Leah moved to White Rock in 2023 and applied for a job at our local store. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and believe everything happens for a reason,” said Leah, who was hired as a Store Associate at the White Rock Thrift Store.

Leah was inspired to work at The Salvation Army Thrift Store because of The Salvation Army’s local and global presence. She also fondly remembers thrifting as a child and teen with her family and acknowledges how those memories would later influence her career path.

Feeling a connection with the community is also important for Leah. “We have fantastic regular guests that I have really gotten to know and look forward to seeing throughout the week. Seeing our guests find treasures that bring them joy, also makes me very happy.”

In addition to serving our guests, Leah has a passion for working with her team. Recognizing that their diversity makes them strong and helps them in supporting each other. “I’ve really come to know and love the people I work with every day, and I feel lucky to work with them,” she said.

While working with our organization, Leah also learned the ins and outs of operating one of our stores and how every role makes an impact. “I didn’t realize all the hard work that goes into every aspect of the Thrift Store. I learned how important every role is, from our donors to the Donation Associate to the cashier and everyone in between. We are all working towards one main goal. The heart of what we do is community and helping; it makes my heart happy too.”

Thank you, Leah, for all that you do for our organization. We are very grateful that you shared your story with us! Together we help care for our communities and each other.
