Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging
Our Commitment
At The Salvation Army Thrift Store, we are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and included, while fulfilling our purpose within The Salvation Army’s mission.
This extends to how we operate as an organization by ensuring our decisions are equitable and inclusive, barriers are addressed, and that everyone feels safe to share feedback and ideas.
Through our dedication to diversity, inclusion and belonging, we strive to create safe and welcoming spaces where all differences are embraced, both in our workplace and the communities we serve.
Our Journey
Rooted in The Salvation Army’s longstanding mission of compassion and service, our DIB work is not new—it’s a continuation of who we’ve always been. Since the founding of the organization in the 19th century, we’ve served the most marginalized without discrimination. Now, we’re strengthening this foundation to help us better serve our people and our communities.
Inclusion has always been part of who we are. This plan helps us live that out every day.
Ted Troughton, Managing Director of The Salvation Army Thrift Store
Our Partnerships
We are proud to be an Employer Partner with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI) as well as Empowered EDI as we continue to listen, learn, and gain a deeper understanding of our team’s diversity and sense of inclusion.
If you have any questions or feedback, we welcome you to reach out to us.

Our Non-Discrimination Policy
The Salvation Army Thrift Store, National Recycling Operations is committed to uplifting and supporting all members of our communities, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity. We stand firmly against discrimination of any kind and are committed to providing an equal and safe space for all, believing that it is our differences that make us who we are, stronger together.
We are committed to helping individuals and families in need in our shared communities across the country. Through our stores, we serve a range of Guests, Donors, and communities as diverse as Canada itself, often providing support to the most vulnerable members of our society.

By virtue of The Salvation Army’s size and national presence, we are one of the largest non-governmental providers of social services to members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada, and have a policy in place to ensure our emergency shelters are inclusive to members of the trans-community. Through a range of services, including social services, housing, and emergency relief, The Salvation Army invests in the future of marginalized and often overlooked Canadians.
Anyone who comes to The Salvation Army will receive assistance based solely on their need and our capacity to help, without discrimination. To learn more, visit The Salvation Army’s Non-Discrimination page.
