Funky T-Shirt Restyle DIY

Contributed by:Denise of Thrifty by Design, Salvation Army Thrift Store Creative Expert.

You can always find a basic t-shirt in your local Salvation Army Thrift Store. Sometimes they’re too basic and you want to add some pizzazz. This is an easy way to add some funk to your find. It’s simple, fast and makes for a one-of-a-kind piece.

  • t-shirt
  • bleach
  • spray bottle
  • doilies

Note: For this DIY I would work in a space with ventilation. I actually worked outside on a nice sunny day.

Once you’ve sourced a t-shirt or two then you’re ready to get started. First gather your materials - bleach, a spray bottle, doilies and a few thrift store t-shirts. I used the doilies for blocking out a design on the t-shirt.

Now spray the t-shirt with bleach where the doilies are placed…

Here's the beginnings of the updated t-shirt...

Then hang the t-shirt and let the bleach do its work!

I used doilies for a couple of the t-shirt updates. So darn easy!

I then played with other items like bike gears and a chain.

And leaves...

This is such an easy and cheap way to refresh a thrift store t-shirt. Here are my favourites - one using a fern, one using the bike gears and chain then one using doilies. Once the bleach has done its magic then wash your t-shirts and you’re ready to show them off. If you want to refashion the t-shirt more you can use scissors to turn it into a tank top. Or repurpose the t-shirt into a reusable bag.
